5th Day Cycling (15 November) - Local Transport!

Local transport - you'd often see lots of people being carried on a cart. Sometimes people wore face masks - apparently not to avoid pollution (although this was one explanation). The main reason - especially for women - was to prevent suntans. It was considered better to be pale skinned, and so you'd see girls on motorcycles who were completely covered with only eyes visible, and wearing gloves Often their dress was immaculate - with white trousers. Heaven knows how they kept it all clean!
